The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is currently hiring a Staff Accountant, a full-time position located in our Washington, DC office.

** This role requires strong payroll processing experience using a robust accounting software such as NetSuite, Sage, Great Plains, Dynamics, or a similar system. **

Nature of Position:

Reporting to the Accounting Manager, the Staff Accountant provides general accounting support to the association. The incumbent is responsible for revenue and expenditure batch review, general ledger account analysis and posting, and the preparation of payroll. In addition, this position is responsible for maintaining AASHTO’s depreciation schedule and assisting with the monthly close out process as well as with generating internal financial reports. Finally, this position will be the team’s subject matter expert on the accounting system; as such, the Staff Accountant will provide technical support in resolving user issues of the accounting system and conduct training sessions as necessary.

Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Review revenue and expenditure batches; prepare and/or audit necessary journal entries.
  • Manage AASHTO’s payroll activities to ensure the proper payroll preparation and accurate time reporting, ensure all employee timesheets and time off requests are completed and approved timely to meet transmission deadlines for each payroll.
  • Work closely with the outsourced payroll provider to manage payroll management for new hires, termination, setting up deductions, updating earning code, and supporting year-end closing of payroll.
  • Review cash receipt and payment postings for accuracy and completeness.
  • Support an efficient and on time monthly financial close, including assigned journal entries, balance sheet account reconciliations, accruals, and any research necessary to resolve discrepancies/coding errors.
  • Assist in maintaining an up-to-date accounting policies and procedures manual in conformity with US GAAP; and for federal grants, Uniform Guidance requirements under 2 CFR Part 200.
  • Provide support for ad-hoc finance departmental projects and other duties as assigned.

The Staff Accountant, at the direction of the Accounting Manager, works closely with all members of the Finance and Administration staff and should feel comfortable working in a supporting role with other staff members.

The incumbent is expected to handle new responsibilities as they arise.

Position Requirements:

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in an accounting and/or financial environment, showing evidence of progressive growth in responsibilities. The successful candidate must have comprehensive knowledge and understanding of US generally accepted accounting principles. The incumbent must have hands-on experience with general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processing. The incumbent must be proficient in a variety of systems and technologies, including robust accounting systems, Microsoft Excel, and other Microsoft tools. They must also be able to troubleshoot common accounting program problems. A bachelor’s degree in accounting, or a related field, is required.

The candidate must have excellent demonstrated communication skills and the ability to work well with others. This will include applying professional knowledge, skills, expertise, and judgment to achieve excellent customer service in all interactions with teammates and stakeholders. The incumbent is oftentimes required to juggle multiple projects at one time and should be skilled in time management and possess the ability to strategically prioritize tasks within the broader departmental goals and needs. The successful candidate should have meticulous attention to detail and should have professional experience working with confidential and sensitive information.

Perks and Benefits:

This position would primarily report out of our Washington, DC office located in Metro Center. AASHTO offers employees hybrid work flexibilities and this role may be approved to work remotely up to 2-3 days per week.

The salary range for this position is $70,000 – 85,000.
