The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is currently hiring a Senior Technical Editor, a full-time position located in our Washington, DC office.
Nature of Position:
The Senior Technical Editor aids the Director of Publications in the production management of the Association’s technical publications. The incumbent manages the largest, most complex documents for the organization; reviews final proofs; and assists in the coordination and production of electronic publishing of technical publications, including assisting in digital preparation. As required, the incumbent also edits and proofreads documents; communicates extensively with authors, vendors, committee members, the meetings department, and the professional technical staff to ensure technical accuracy as well as to expedite the progress of a document from the balloting process through to query responses and printing or online posting. The incumbent is responsible for following the committee recommendations on publication priority and working diligently to produce accurate and professional technical documents as quickly as possible. The incumbent communicates directly and often with committee members to ensure quality and expeditiousness in publication production. They also play an important role in committee’s annual meeting, helping to establish the annual publishing queue and working with members and other meeting attendees to evolve published offerings to meet their needs, gathering feedback to improve technical publications. The incumbent works closely with the Digital Publications Manager and Director to research and assess user experience and trends in publication technology enhancements and within the industry of technical publishing. Incumbent facilitates surveys and personal interviews with committee members, librarians, and customers, as well as attends workshop sessions about changing product innovations in the field.
The incumbent is responsible for adhering to the rules of the AASHTO Style Guide and will be asked to write and refer to specific technical style guidelines for vendors and or technical staff regarding the nuances and intricacies of their projects. The incumbent is oftentimes required to juggle multiple projects at one time, and should be skilled in working efficiently in partnership with fellow technical specialists or independently with little supervision, always communicating project status and potential challenges to the Director of Publications. The incumbent performs occasional design and desktop publishing tasks for other Association staff members when necessary. The Senior Technical Editor may also supervise other production personnel, including consultants and temporary employees. The incumbent is also responsible for completing a variety of general administrative tasks in support of the Publications Division following the production procedures for electronic organization and project closeouts.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of seven to ten years of technical and/or large book production experience using a variety of digital production processes. A Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, or related field is desired. In addition, course work and/or training in design, publishing, printing, technical editing, project/portfolio management, and digital publishing/production is desirable. Previous association or non-profit work is desirable, but not required. Experience with changing publications technology industry and software is required.
The candidate must have excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills, as well as technical copyediting and proofreading skills. In addition, the candidate must have knowledge of PC-based word processing (emphasis on Microsoft Word), desktop publishing, and design software, and skills in other PC applications, such as PDF creation and modification, equation creation, spreadsheet manipulation, desktop layout, and demonstrated understanding of all aspects of the publication process, and digital preparation is required. The incumbent must have the ability to be juggle multiple projects, work under pressure, and meet tight deadlines. Graphic design experience is a plus.
