What you will be doing:
In this position you will perform structural engineering analysis and calculations for the development of bridge load ratings, bridge management tasks, and overload permit assessment. You will also complete bridge safety inspections, including routine, non-redundant steel tension member (NSTM), low water, and in-depth inspections.  Some design and preparation of bridge construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and report tasks may be involved as well.

Our organization, mission and culture:
The DOT&PF Bridge Section provides design services for new bridge and bridge rehabilitation construction projects, as well as a broad range of services associated with the existing inventory of the State’s 1,000 public highway bridges. We work hard to support our Department’s mission to Keep Alaska Moving.

The Bridge Section is a production-oriented office comprised of hands-on engineers who put safety first and are recognized nationally as experts in our field.  The office culture is supportive and encouraging, with opportunities for growth.  The office has 25 staff members – small enough to be personal, but large enough to have a broad knowledge base in all subdisciplines of bridge engineering.  The position offers the satisfaction of knowing you’ve made significant accomplishments to build and preserve Alaska’s infrastructure.

The benefits of joining our team:
Alaska DOT&PF offers great opportunities for professional development, having a wide variety of challenges involving all aspects of bridge analysis and design.  The incumbent will learn state-of-the-art tools, technologies, and methods to tackle these challenges. Comprehensive staff development is an important aspect of this job. Formal and in-house training are provided with a focus on advancing an Engineer 1 to the Technical Engineer 1 position.  Support to get a drone pilot’s license and use drones for bridge inspection is also provided.

The working environment you can expect:
The position is located in the Alaska DOT&PF Headquarters building in Juneau that is situated adjacent to the Gastineau Channel. We offer flexible work schedules. Travel opportunities throughout the State are available.
