The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is currently hiring a Marketing Manager, a full-time position located in our Washington, DC office.
Nature of the Position:
The Marketing Manager will play a key role in coordinating and supporting the overall strategic marketing of AASHTO and its various technical service programs, specialty contracts and centers of excellence. The position will support the goals of raising member agency participation in AASHTO technical service programs, products, meetings and services and enhancing AASHTO’s overall image and position within the transportation services marketplace.
Under the direction of the Director of Communications and Marketing, the Marketing Manager will provide marketing oversight and strategic support for all AASHTO technical service as well as those programs contracted to AASHTO by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) –Center for Environmental Excellence, BATIC and others. This work will include the planning and execution of online and print marketing and sponsorship efforts, along with writing promotional copy, coordinating design and production of marketing materials, maintenance of contact databases, distribution of product/program information, social media guidance, trade show and meeting coordination, and special events. The Marketing Manager will also assist AASHTO’s Meeting and Member Services department with the promotion of AASHTO meetings held throughout the year. The incumbent will also coordinate AASHTO’s marketing presence at the AASHTO Annual and Spring meetings as well as the annual TRB meeting.
In collaboration with the Director of Communications and Marketing and other technical service program managers, the Marketing and Communications Manager will be responsible for development of an annual AASHTO marketing work plan and will participate in the development of the annual AASHTO Communications and Marketing budget. In connection with the development and execution of the annual marketing work plan, the incumbent will:
- Have primary responsibility for planning and implementation of AASHTO’s annual America’s Transportation Awards program, Work Zone Awareness Week and Crash Responder Safety Week.
- Engage with the Special Committee on AASHTOWare, and other technical service program oversight committees on a regular basis to assess stakeholder needs and ensure marketing efforts are meeting performance expectations.
The Marketing Manager will lead AASHTO’s marketing council to ensure a regular and consistent dialogue and collaboration among AASHTO’s marketing staff including those specifically assigned to Publications, AASHTO re:source, the National Operations Center of Excellence, and AASHTOWare.
The Marketing Manager may serve as the acting director of the Communications Division when the Director of Communications is unavailable. In some situations, the Marketing and Communications Manager may assist in writing and editing duties as assigned, including the drafting of press releases, presentations, meeting scripts, memos, correspondence and social media messages, and assists the communications director with other tasks as assigned. The Marketing Manager must be available for overnight out-of-town travel up to 20 days per year.
The successful candidate will have eight years of marketing and/or communications experience, with prior work demonstrating evidence of professional growth and increased responsibility. Previous transportation association work is desirable, but not required. A Bachelor’s degree preferably in marketing or communications is required. Evidence of a higher degree of professional development and/or management training is highly desirable.
The candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as proofreading and advance organizational skills; demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of marketing, and communications activities; Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational and personal sales skills; Experience developing and managing budgets; clear project management and planning experience; and the commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams as a means of ensuring marketing services are coordinated across the enterprise. The incumbent must have the ability to work independently, to work under pressure, to multi-task, to meet deadlines, as well as to use a personal computer proficiently.
