The WI Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is seeking an interested and qualified individual to fill a Structural Design Engineer (Structural Engineer Transportation Entry, Senior, or Advanced) vacancy in the Bureau of Structures!
This full-time position will be headquartered in Madison, WI.

Position Summary
This is a Structural Engineer Transportation in the Bureau of Structures, Structures Design Section. This position will perform progressively more difficult structural engineering duties and is responsible for the routine design of Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) bridges and related structures. These include, but are not limited to: new bridges with vertical curves and skews; the rehabilitation and repair of existing bridges of different materials; and additional structure types, including retaining walls and box culverts.
This position produces design sketches and/or structure plans for new bridges, as well as the rehabilitation and repair of existing structures. This position also answers questions from the Transportation Specialists (plans drafters) during plan preparation. Additionally, this position is responsible for assisting in the resolution of bridge construction issues.
The Structural Engineer Transportation position requires a background in structural analysis and design. Extensive training in the BOS Structures Design Section will be provided in this position.
At the entry level, the study of American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Load and Resistance Factor Design (AASHTO LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications, WisDOT Bridge Manual, and BOS Structures Design Section policy are included.
At the senior level and advanced levels, this position performs the final review and verification of the structure to safely carry the design loads and to conform to state and federal specifications.
Salary Information
The Entry level is in schedule-range 14-14 with an annual salary of $55,120 to $63,253, plus excellent benefits.
A $2000 sign-on bonus applies to Entry level candidates who do not have any prior permanent full-time state service in the last five years, split between the first paycheck ($1000) and upon completing the 12 month probationary period ($1000).
The Senior level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $70,970 to $86,902, plus excellent benefits.
The Advanced level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $82,597 to $93,350, plus excellent benefits.
A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.
Qualifications
Minimum requirement: Upon hire, candidate must have graduated, or will be graduating by December 2023, from an ABET accredited college or university with a 4-year degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field, OR possess an Engineer in Training (EIT) credential, OR possess a Professional Engineer (PE) credential.
In addition to the above:
To be eligible at the Senior level, candidates must have 3.5 years of professional experience with structural engineering.
To be eligible at the Advanced level, candidates must have a valid Professional Engineering (PE) registration and the ability to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state.
