The Region Operations Traffic Engineer (Engineer I – II) is responsible for designing highway signing, pavement marking, and traffic control for a Department of Transportation (DOT) Region. Duties may include, but are not limited to, designing Section C – Traffic Control design plans received from DOT Road Design or Region Design; designing Section S – for design plans received from DOT Road Design or Region Design; designing Section M – Permanent Marking for design plans received from DOT Road Design or Region Design; designing contracted project plans (e.g., durable pavement marking, permanent signing, traffic control beacons, traffic signal, etc.) for Road and Bridges; reviewing state, city, and county roadway-related project plans; inspecting completed permanent signing and pavement marking projects; directing installation of new and replacement signs on state highways; coordinating installation/removal of signs by maintenance crews; determining, identifying, and coordinating installation of No Passing Zones on state highways and country roads; and conducting and reviewing traffic-related studies to ensure accurate traffic movements and speeds on state highways.
A valid driver’s license is required.
A typical workweek is 40 hours, Monday through Friday; although, hours may vary during construction activity, including weekends. Occasional overtime is required.
Occasional in-state travel with overnights stays may be required.
Work assignments are occasionally performed outside around highway traffic.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Only applicants with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and work experience related highway traffic engineering will be considered.
civil engineering techniques (desirable but not required);
State of Traffic Engineering theories, principles, and design practices;
basic practices and terminology of computer operations and computer aided design and drafting practices;
DOT policies and procedures (preferred but not required);
South Dakota Standard Specifications for Road and Bridges (desirable but not required);
highway construction projects including, but not limited to, pavement markings, signs, and traffic control (desirable but not required);
data collection and evaluation techniques.
perform basic mathematical computations to make precise measurements and determine rates of materials;
operate basic computer applications, use Microsoft, and other related software.
display high standards of ethical conduct;
demonstrate self-confidence and take action when needed;
attend to all details of assignments and complete work properly, accurately, and thoroughly;
listen attentively to others and clearly convey information and ideas;
develop expertise by actively identifying development needs, taking advantage of development opportunities, and applying newly learned knowledge and skills on the job;

use arms, legs, and back to safely move and drag up to 60 pounds occasionally;
