The Idaho Transportation Department is looking to fill key engineering positions in our Bridge Section. The incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of the design and construction of bridge highway projects, from inception to final completion. The incumbent will also be responsible for all aspects of bridge operations such as bridge load rating, analyzing overweight truck permits, and safety inspection of in-service bridges.

Idaho Transportation Departments Engineering positions are part of the Technical Engineering Services Lead (TESL) Horizontal Career Path which is a 7 year horizontal career path. Through on-the-job training, classroom training, achievement of team goals and agency goals, there will be opportunity to progress through the four step program. After successful completion of each step, wages may increase as outlined below:

-EIT – starting wage: $24.50
-Associate Engineer – starting wage: $28.00
-Staff Engineer – starting wage: $32.00 – $35.50
-Staff Engineer 1 – starting wage:$35.50
-Technical Engineer Services Leader – completion wage: $39.00

Technical Engineering Services Lead (TESL) engineers are considered fully competent professional engineers, capable of performing all the conventional aspects of engineering of the functional areas of responsibility of the discipline involved. Candidates will be expected to independently evaluate, select, and adapt situations, and modify techniques, procedures, and criteria to solve problems encountered. Some positions involve extensive travel and frequent overnight stays; being on call and responding to emergencies at any hour. The physical ability to walk over rough terrain, climb ladders and lift and carry equipment weighing up to 25 pounds is required. The ability to work independently with minimal supervision is a positive attribute.

Example of Duties 

-Design and support of construction of bridges.
-Bridge load rating.
-Overweight truck permit analysis.
-Safety inspection of in-service bridges.
-Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work, as part of a major project or a total project of moderate scope.

Minimum Qualifications Candidates must meet one of the three bulleted criteria below within 6 months of employment offer:

-Certification by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers as an Engineer-In-Training;
-OR Certification as an EIT from another jurisdiction that included graduation from a four-year engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET);
-OR graduation from a four-year engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) PLUS verification that the candidate has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination.
-Valid driver’s license is required for this position.

-Working knowledge in Bentley MicroStation and Microsoft Project Professional desired.
-Structural knowledge and or structural college level courses preferred.
-Course related work in structural design preferably bridges or other transportation related structures.   Have completed coursework in reinforced and pre-stressed concrete design, steel design, and foundation engineering.
