Bridge Asset Engineer

The position will serve as the Bridge Owner and is comprehensively responsible for supporting all bridge asset related activities in the District.  You will serve as the liaison between the District and Central Office and will
provide strategic direction for INDOT’s bridge efforts through developing and applying policies and procedures. As the Bridge Owner, you will work closely with the District Technical Services Director, the District System Asset Manager, District Scoping Manager, District System Asset team, Central Office Bridge Asset Management, the Bridge Inspection Area Engineer and Bridge Inspection Staff to set, manage and coordinate the overall bridge program for the District.

A Day in the Life:
Coordinates with the Bridge Inspection Area Engineer
Develops the bridge: capital, maintenance plan and deficiency, ID/IQ programs for the District
Provides prioritized list of bridge projects to the Asset Management team
Coordinates the response to bridge deficiencies including providing a prioritized list to maintenance
Prepares all necessary documentation for bridges to be submitted for programming
Responsible for ensuring the district bridge program selects appropriate projects
Serves as liaison between District, Central Office, Pavement Division and all other departments as required
Maintains list of bridge and small structure placeholder projects
Monitors the project schedules of all “Watch List” bridges monthly
Responsible for maintaining bridge conditions in the district
Prioritizes the bridge projects for the district
Member of the Bridge Asset Management team
Attends training sessions and conferences to learn new techniques & requirements
Recommends process improvements as necessary. Responsible for keeping track of assigned projects and recommending solutions to problems
Required to attend field checks including border bridges meetings, seminars and conferences as needed
Required to do specialty projects or specific functions as directed by the Director of Technical Services and/or Director of Bridges
Prepares responses to inquiries and complaints from citizens, legislators, the Governor’s office, other agencies, and other states
May serve as an expert witness in law suits filed against the state

What You’ll Need for Success:
Registered Professional Engineer, and have a minimum of 5 years bridge related experience in design, inspection, construction & asset management
Ability to read and interpret technical documents including but not limited to bridge and large culvert design and rehabilitation plans, roadway plans, inspection reports, maintenance records, geotechnical data, hydraulic data, and maps
Familiarity with National Bridge Inspection Standards(NBIS) bridge inspection standards
Specialized knowledge of engineering principles and practices concerning all areas of bridge design, bridge construction, bridge materials and bridge maintenance
Practical knowledge of construction and maintenance practices and methods obtained through field experience
Knowledge of department policies, standards and specifications relating to bridges
Knowledge of department systems relating to the pavement program, including but not limited to Scheduling Project Management System(SPMS), dTIMS and Work Management System(WMS)
Knowledge of bridge maintenance principles, practices, methods and techniques related to maintenance of bridges and large culverts
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing, and to follow oral and written instructions
Basic computer skills and the ability to become proficient in new programs and databases
Ability to perform basic calculations
Must have valid Indiana driver’s license
Broad knowledge, understanding, and application of the practices and methods in State Transportation
