Location:  Ames, Iowa – Design Bureau/Soils Design Section

Shift Requirements:  Days, Monday through Friday. Flexible work hours available. Possibility to telework part-time after completion of an initial 6-month probationary period.

Our most successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of the highway design process necessary to develop highway projects from concept to construction.  You also must have a comprehensive understanding of advanced geotechnical engineering including retaining wall design, specialized foundations application and design, soil stability determinations and remediation, and advanced geotechnical interpretations associated with highway and bridge projects.

As a Geotechnical Engineer | (TES) You will be responsible for advanced geotechnical investigations, analysis, recommendations, and designs for transportation projects throughout the State of Iowa. These include geotechnical engineering for roadways, subgrades, bridges, culverts, buildings, and fill embankments.

Additional duties will include, but are not limited to:

Advising consultants on non-standard, highly complex subsurface investigations, analyses, and geotechnical designs, to include structural bearing analysis, retaining walls, subsurface treatments, settlements, stabilities, and drainage.
Reviewing highly advanced laboratory and field investigation programs under contract with the Iowa DOT including their accuracy and applicability as well as adherence to standard roadway design plans.
Assisting with emergency response, disaster coordination needed as a result of major rain and flooding events.
Special Requirements:
Must possess and maintain registration as a professional engineer in Iowa, as established by the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau’s Engineering and Land Survey Board as an Iowa Professional Engineer in Active status.
Maintain a valid Iowa Driver’s License.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) All of the following (a and b):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Two years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering.

2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. One year of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering; and
c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.

3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
