Highway Maintenance Worker
Starting at $20.47/$21.90/hourly
Aid in community safety, maintaining our roads. Maintain road surfaces, rights-of-ways, and roadsides, performing minor equipment repairs and providing traffic control and inspection activities year-round for summer construction and winter snow and ice control removal and de-icing. Maintain snow fences and documentation on snow and ice data and perform traffic control set-ups. Position locations may include areas near Duluth, Ely, Grand Rapids, Hibbing, International Falls, Moose Lake, Silver Bay, Pine City, Carlton, Cook, Effie, Floodwood, Grand Marais, Littlefork, McGregor, Sandstone, and Two Harbors.

At either level, must be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction by the end of probation.
Exam Part 1:
The Transportation Generalist (TG) level can be achieved with:
One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience)
Education: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
* Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Must possess a Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) with no air brake restriction. Tanker Endorsement must be obtained by hire date. Must obtain Class A within 6 months.
YOU MUST POSSESS AND LIST COMMERICAL DRIVER’S LICENSE WITH NO AIR BRAKE RESTRICTION AND ANY AND ALL ENDORSEMENTS/ CERTIFICATIONS ON YOUR RESUME OR APPLICATION.
The Transportation Associate (TA) level can be achieved with:
Must possess a Commercial Driver’s Permit with no air brake restrictions at the time of application. Tanker Endorsement must be obtained by hire date. You will be trained and must obtain a Class A CDL within 3 months of hire.

ONCE YOU POSSESS THE CDL PLEASE LIST CDL PERMIT (OR CLASS “A” OR “B” CDL IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE LICENSE) WITH NO AIR BRAKE RESTRICTION AND TANKER ENDORSEMENT ON YOUR RESUME.

Exam Part 2: Passing a math assessment test at Level 3 and Level 4 on the computerized reading test.
