The Challenge
We are looking for an experienced Deputy Traffic Engineer to join our Division 5 Traffic Engineering and Operations team.
In this role you will:
- Direct the Traffic Engineering team’s daily operations, including managing all requests for traffic investigations and supervising junior Engineers, Engineering Specialists, and Engineering Technicians in Traffic Engineering and Operations.
- Coordinate and conduct field investigations accumulating data and observations related to speed zone studies, traffic ordinances, no parking studies, regulatory signing and intersection improvements.
- Lead investigations consisting of retrieving crash history using Traffic Engineering Accident Analysis System (TEAAS).
- Lead staff in applying traffic engineering principles performing traffic engineering investigations and analysis, making recommendations, and seeking funds for safety and operational improvements.
- Perform Special Commercial and Access Management reviews.
- Manage our TODDS, LOGO, Sponsor-A-Highway programs, and Special Event requests.
- Assist Division Traffic Engineer/Deputy Division Traffic Engineer in the operation and management of traffic services team as required and provide organizational direction and leadership in their absence.
- Complete performance evaluations of direct reports.
What You Bring
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of Traffic Engineering, The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and NCDOT Signal Specifications, and Geometric Design.
- Experience operating and timing Traffic Signals, including signal timing software.
- Experience tracking operation cost expenditures.
- Customer service experience with the public, local government officials, and NCDOT employees, including public meetings and field reviews
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practice of traffic engineering; AASHTO road design guide; pc warrants, synchro, and the NCDOT construction manual.
- Working knowledge of NC general statues, administrative code, NCDOT fiscal, and staff policies and procedures.
- Ability to develop and administer purchase order contracts.
- Ability to adapt and apply new technologies in traffic engineering to enhance performance of existing and new traffic control devices.
- Solid communications skills to communicate verbally and in writing with citizens, government officials, employees, and other NCDOT customers.
- Computer skills to use a laptop and manage a database.
- Ability to train, guide, and direct staff to accomplish objectives.
- Ability to comply with and promote Division safety program.
- Ability to accomplish and report planned operational performance activities within budget.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Steel toe shoes.

You may be required to register as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, and
3+ years of relevant experience; or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
