The Challenge
We are looking for a skilled Engineering Technician to join our Halifax County District 1 team as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects.
In this role, you will:
- Support senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts and District Office duties.
- Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with contracts, plans, and specifications.
- Observe and document contractor’s operations, make measurements and calculations of pay quantities, and perform standardized material sampling and testing.
- Coordinate reviews of technical plans and drawings relating to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests, subdivision design standards, and road addition packages.
- Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
- Keep daily inspector diaries on project operations, complete material reports, including materials received, document pay records, perform construction calculations and computer/iPad data and record entry.
What You Bring
- Basic knowledge conducting routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standards/codes, and specifications.
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
- Experience reading/interpreting construction plans, standards, and specifications.
- Experience performing math functions, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Experience maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad date entry.
- Good communications skills to communicate effectively with co-workers, contractors, and the public.
- Computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and using iPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and SharePlus/SharePoint.
- Ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment.
- You can apply NCDOT safety standards and programs to operations.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certifications for material sampling and testing.
- You can work independently or as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors.
- Ability to safely drive a State vehicle.
- Safety toe shoes.
Education & Experience
Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
2+ years relevant technician-level experience; or
An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Notes
You may be exposed to hazards, including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
You will be working outside in varying temperatures and weather conditions and will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
You may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by project workload/staffing requirements on any assigned Division 4 project.
