The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is seeking applications for candidates for the position of Environmental Services Trainee within the Division of within the Division of Capital Program Management, Capital Program Support. Environmental Services Trainees are assigned a 40 – hour work week. Current starting salary is $50,737 and $53,050 after six months. As a NJ State Department, NJDOT offers a comprehensive benefit package including Health Care (medical, prescription drug, dental and vision care), Pension, Deferred Compensation, 13 paid holidays, and Benefit Leave (12 vacation days, 15 sick days and 3 administrative days).
Standard workweek is Monday through Friday.
The Office of Environmental Solutions (OES) is responsible for ensuring that the Department is
in compliance with State and federal environmental regulations for all Capital construction projects,
and for compliance with all commitments resulting from regulatory agency requirements. The OES provides project – related environmental services to Capital Program Management and other units of the Department. These services include the preparation of environmental documents required to obtain federal and State funding for Capital projects; obtaining environmental permits from State and federal regulatory agencies; consultation with the State Historic Preservation Office regarding cultural resources; Green Acres coordination; monitoring of construction projects for environmental compliance; tracking environmental rules, regulations and laws for changes that could affect transportation projects.

You will be part of an environmental team working on current Department of Transportation projects.
• preparation of environmental documentation to assess impacts of proposed roadway projects
• preparation/review of technical environmental studies, environmental plans, and applications for environmental permits that are required for NJDOT projects
• review of design plans to ensure that environmental commitments have been included
• providing environmental input to scopes of work, project work plans, budgets, and schedules
• prepare technical assistance on architectural history and history research
The Department of Transportation (DOT) currently offers a telework pilot program, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work at your primary residence outside of your assigned DOT work location. This program does not supersede the “New Jersey First Act”, which requires newly hired NJDOT employees to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey.
New hires will not be eligible for the telework pilot program until they successfully complete their 4 – month working test period.
EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in one of the Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences/Studies, Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Environmental Planning, Physical Geography or in Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Mining Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Bio – resource Engineering.
NOTE: The following education requirements are applicable to positions in the Department of Transportation assigned to all programs except Environmental Services Support Unit (ESSU)/Facilities Hazard Compliance Monitoring.
Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following Physical, Natural or Social Sciences; Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Chemical Science, Biological Science, Geology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Planning, Natural History, Anthropology, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, Archaeology, Sociology, Urban Studies, Geography, Economics, Agricultural Science, Marine Science, Urban Planning, Transportation Planning and Geoscience or a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Engineering in one of the following disciplines: Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Bio – Resource Engineering.
LICENSE: Appointee will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey.
PREFERRED: Preference will be given to candidates who meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications standards for Architectural History or Historic Architecture (https://www.nps.gov/articles/sec – standards – prof – quals.htm) and have familiarity with federal and state historic preservation laws, regulations, rules, policies, and National Park
Service guidance documents.
