Why does the job exist?
This position assists stranded motorists on the interstate system with diagnosis and repairs to passenger vehicles and provides emergency response personnel (at crash incident sites) with incident notification when needed and a safe area to work in. This assistance produces increased mobility and reduced congestion for all roadway users on the Interstate Highway System. This position is with the District Three Courtesy Patrol.
How does it get done?
By assisting stranded motorists with inspection and routine minor repair of vehicles in order to move stranded motorists from roadways and from fast moving traffic into a safe area. Inspect condition of belts, hoses, electrical systems, brake linings, tires and wheel bearings, replace batteries, and fluids. May provide training and technical assistance to less experienced technicians.

The traveling public and stranded motorists.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience:
– As an automotive service technician or mechanic in a maintenance facility or repair shop;
– Using computerized diagnostic equipment;
– Performing routine inspection, maintenance and repairs on light-duty vehicles; and
– Using a variety of hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches to perform light-duty work in hard-to-reach places.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent + ASE Certifications in 2 systems and one (1) year of experience as an automotive service technician or mechanic in a maintenance facility and/or repair shop setting, including the use of computerized diagnostic equipment. Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and drug test and is conditional pending
results. Business reference check and Driver’s License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Work outside in varying weather conditions -hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, and environmental allergens; exposure to mechanical parts; precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles. Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and work under pressure next to high-speed traffic in all weather conditions on various types of terrain. Use of hands to finger, handle or feel while performing various assigned duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception, and ability to adjust focus; bending; squatting; climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling to perform repairs. Able to work in high pressure situations and able to make decisions independently.
