Why does the job exist?
This position is with the District Three Courtesy Patrol Program which provides roadside assistance to stranded motorists on the interstate system within the Albuquerque metro area. The position performs diagnosis on passenger vehicles in an effort to maintain mobility by making minor repairs on the vehicles so they could move off the roadway.  The Courtesy Patrol Program works in partnership with State, County, and local emergency response agencies and other New Mexico Department of Transportation units as part of a highway incident management team.

How does it get done?
By assisting stranded motorists with inspection and routine minor repair of vehicles in order to move stranded motorists away from the fast-moving interstate traffic environment and into a safer area. Inspect condition of belts, hoses, electrical system, brake linings, batteries, tires and wheel bearings, and replace some fluids. There is constant radio communications with the Transportation Management Center which is also a partner in the timely response to traffic incidents by having the interstate visible via cameras and providing information to the public by use of the dynamic message boards.

Who are the customers?
The traveling public, stranded motorists and State, County and local emergency response agencies including law enforcement to coordinate efforts for traffic incident management which will reduce congestion for all roadway users on the interstate system.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience:

– As an automotive service technician or mechanic in a maintenance;
– Performing routine inspection, minimal maintenance and repairs on various types of vehicles;
– Using a variety of hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches to perform light-duty work in hard to reach places;
– To provide quick diagnostic of disabled vehicle based on discussion with driver and visual inspection; and
– To assist first responders for traffic management during a roadway incident.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent and six (6) months of experience as an automotive service technician or mechanic in a maintenance facility and/or repair shop setting, including the use of computerized diagnostic equipment. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Work is performed primarily in a shop on a roadside environment which would but may be require the ability to perform work outdoors, walking, sitting, stooping, lifting and bending movements. Work with and around hazards equipment and materials such as power tools, equipment, fumes, gases, high noise, and chemicals.  Some work may also be performed in an office setting to include working with computers, faxes, copiers and printers. Must be able to respond to emergency callouts on short notice. Work is conducted outside in varying weather conditions, hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust and night conditions.

Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Work is performed primarily in a shop environment but may be required to work outdoors, walking, sitting, stooping, and bending. Work with and around hazards equipment and materials such as power tools, equipment, fumes, gases, high noise, and chemicals. 24 hour call out during adverse weather conditions. Work may also be performed in an office setting to include working with computers, faxes, copiers and printers. Statewide travel with possible overnight stays is required. Must be able to respond to emergency callouts on short notice.
