Why does the job exist?
Position will operate medium to heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner to maintain US and New Mexico highways for the safety of the traveling public.

How does it get done?
Incumbent will operate medium to heavy equipment to maintain US and New Mexico highways. Incumbent will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties required in the patrol. Use of various hand tools. Knowledge and experience in snow removal and emergency operations (call outs). Removal of trash and dead animals from right of way.

Candidate will be required to perform and pass a demonstrative abilities test utilizing heavy equipment in order to move forward to an interview panel.

Who are the customers?
Ensure the US and New Mexico highways are safe for the traveling public.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in:
–  Snow removal operations;
–  Traffic control; and
–  Fence maintenance and guardrail repair.

Class “A” commercial driver’s license will have preference.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent and six (6) months of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loader, five and ten yard dump truck, self-propelled broom, roller, and/or mower. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker and/or Hazmat endorsement. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Statutory Requirement:
Must possess a New Mexico Driver’s License and must acquire a New Mexico Class B CDL within 6 months of hire. Post-offer Physical and Pre-Employment Drug Test are required for safety sensitive classifications.

Employment Requirements
Successful pre-employment physical and drug test.  Must obtain Class A CDL within 6 months of hire. Must have and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions – hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow, exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, rough/rugged terrain, noxious plants and infected trash, exposure to hazardous chemicals, insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, stressful situations, subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain, high speed/high volume traffic, interaction with the public, local county, school and city officials by phone an in person, irregular hours day or night, subject to call out for emergencies, heavy lifting, sitting/standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays; extended or irregular hours day or night; and call-out away from post of duty to include nighttime work and snow removal as applicable are required.
