Why does the job exist?
Position will plan, direct, or coordinate personnel and activities for the construction of US and New Mexico highways. Participate in the conceptual development of construction projects and oversee their organization, scheduling, and implementation. Confer with supervisory personnel, contractors, or design professionals to discuss and resolve matters, such as work procedures, complaints, or construction problems. Interpret and explain plans and contract terms to administrative staff. Take actions to deal with the results of unforeseen delays, bad weather, or emergencies at construction sites.
How does it get done?
By planning, directing, or coordinating, personnel and activities concerned with the design and construction of New Mexico and US highways. By ensuring all construction projects are constructed according to plans and specifications within budget, using proper documentation and knowledge of construction methods and procedures.
Who are the customers?
The traveling public and pedestrians.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in:
– Supervision;
– TTCP and ACNM training;
– Critical Path Method; and
– New Mexico Standard Specifications for Highway and Bridge Construction.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and ten (10) years of relevant experience, four (4) years of which must be supervisory. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. May require Technician Training Certification Program (TTCP) certificates within six (6) months of hire to include but not limited to; Nuclear Densometer, Concrete Field and Lb Testing, and Aggregate, Soils, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Traffic Control, SWPPP, Inertial Profiler Inspector and Drilled Shaft Inspector.
Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
Work is performed in an office and/or field in varying weather conditions – hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, and pollen. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, inclement weather, construction equipment and high-speed traffic. Work with nuclear devices; heights and confined spaces. toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, rough/rugged terrain, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to hazardous chemicals, insects and reptiles, loud noises, stressful situations; subject to falls and bruises, subject to irregular hours day or night, call out for emergencies and frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty; extended hours and occasional travel. Heavy lifting; sitting/standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Possible geographic location change.
