The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is seeking applications for candidates for the position of Engineer Trainee Transportation (ETT) (Mechanical) within the Division of Operations. Engineer Trainees are assigned a 40 – hour work week. Current starting salary is $62,088 and $64,482 after six months. As a NJ State Department, NJDOT offers a comprehensive benefits package including Health Care (medical, prescription drug, dental and vision care), Pension, Deferred Compensation, 13 paid holidays, and Benefit Leave (12 vacation days, 15 sick days and 3 administrative days). Standard workweek is Monday through Friday.
Operations is responsible for providing both engineering and operations support to the Department of Transportation (DOT) in various ways. Some of the many ways Operations provides this support is by managing the Department’s fleet of vehicles, trucks and equipment, maintaining all diesel and gasoline fuel levels, stations and pumps, maintaining and operating movable bridges and tunnel systems in accordance with state and federal regulations, acquiring permits for oversized equipment as well as other services, train new employees on using state owned equipment as well as acquiring CDL and overseeing weather related emergencies.
The Bureau of Equipment, which is within Operations, writes specifications for heavy trucks and equipment used throughout the State crews and garages, purchases new equipment using state contracts, acquires new license plates and registrations for new equipment, manages EZ – Pass assignments and violations on all DOT equipment, schedules and manages auctions of old equipment, installs and manages radios in all fleet for tracking and communication purposes, maintains and troubleshoots fuel stations and pumps, performs inspections of new equipment, and much more. The work and environment are fast paced and require strong organizational and communication skills.
The ETT in this position will be responsible for the following:
• Survey equipment users, perform market research, and acquire data from vendors and manufacturers to determine
critical parameters for specification preparation.
• Gather and tabulate data
• Make necessary engineering calculations, such as weight distribution on a truck
• Prepare competitive bid specifications
• Prepare design drawings to supplement bid specifications when necessary
• Respond to requests for information
• Prepare reports investigating equipment problems and recommending solutions
• Evaluate bids received and prepare a bid recommendation
• Provide input for equipment contract awards, rejections, and protest responses
• Setup equipment training for new equipment
• Assist with providing information for contract complaints and corrective action when equipment does not perform as needed
• Work with vendors in the industry to setup demos of new equipment and technology being introduced
• Initiate orders for new equipment and prepare appropriate documents for payment when equipment is delivered.
Work experience within this unit WILL qualify as approved Design Experience for the issuance of a NJ PE license.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Note: Possession of a valid Professional Engineer’s License issued by the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
Note: An Engineer – In – Training (EIT) certification issued by the Division of Consumer Affairs, New Jersey Office of the Attorney General may be substituted for the above education requirement. Applicants must submit proof of the EIT certification and the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam results. The area of discipline indicated on the FE exam results (e.g., Civil, Electrical and Computers, Chemical, Industrial and Systems, Environmental, Mechanical, and Other Disciplines) must be appropriate to the position.

Failure to provide evaluation will result in your application being disqualified.
Anticipated Graduation: NJDOT will accept applications from students anticipating graduation in May 2024. No offer of employment will be made without proof of degree.
