The role:  

Join our team in Bend as a senior traffic recorder technician! You will conduct field studies and compile data for traffic movement, vehicle usage and vehicle distribution. You will maintain and troubleshoot automatic traffic recorder (ATR) equipment and provide training and guidance to other staff. Apply today!

The goal of this recruitment is to fill this position at an engineering specialist 2 level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for an engineering specialist 1 ($2,944- $4,521) to apply, as we may consider underfilling the position until the selected candidate meets the minimum qualifications for an engineering specialist 2. Underfill training will not exceed three years.

A day in the life:

  • Schedule and collect data for annual coverage count programs.
  • Verify the accuracy of traffic data collected and prepare reports.
  • Install and maintain traffic monitoring equipment at automatic traffic recorder (ATR) stations.
  • Program and calibrate traffic recorder settings.
  • Verify data collection settings and lane designation.
  • Perform diagnostic testing on ATR counting equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose faulty components.
  • Assist with locating and reviewing potential ATR sites.
  • Coordinate with utilities and contractors for ATR construction activities and scheduling.
  • Schedule and monitor work for the manual traffic counting program.
  • Oversee traffic survey technicians.
  • Work is performed in heavy traffic conditions 70% of the time and may require working early or flexible hours, working in adverse weather conditions, driving for long periods of time and overnight travel.
  • Work may involve bending, stooping, climbing ladders and lifting up to 60 pounds.

What we need for an engineering specialist 2:

Three and one-half years (42 months) of sub-professional engineering experience.

OR

An associate’s degree in engineering technology from a community college or technical school of engineering and two years of experience directly related to engineering.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience (such as a bachelor’s degree in engineering plus six months’ engineering experience).

Note: If you are currently a transportation maintenance specialist 2 (TMS2) or have been one in the past, in addition to your completed application, please attach section three of your TMS2 position description to receive full credit for your related work. If your experience includes work in multiple maintenance disciplines (e.g. highway, sign, bridge, striping or landscape) please attach section three of the position description for each of the relevant disciplines.

What we need for an engineering specialist 1 (underfill):

Eighteen (18) months of experience directly related to engineering.

OR

An associate’s degree in engineering technology from a community college or technical school.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

What we need for both:

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Experience using computers for collecting and entering data.
  • Experience working outdoors along the roadside or with telecommunications equipment.
