Salary Range: $4,306 – $6,680

The role:  

The ODOT Graduate Program is designed to help recent college graduates transition from student to full-time professional. For up to 24 months, participants are provided rotational assignments within ODOT engineering disciplines. They are recognized as full-time, permanent employees, receiving a salary, a full benefits package and mentorship from a registered professional engineer (PE). This can provide up to two years’ qualifying time toward obtaining PE licensure. Following successful completion of the 24-month program, the participant will transition into a full-time regular position in the discipline and crew of original hire. The program is open to all qualified applicants including current, qualified ODOT employees.

We are recruiting for a program candidate in Ontario to join our Region 5: Eastern Oregon Technical Center. This important work will require the incumbent to train on-the-job in the following duties:

·       Work with contractors and professional engineers to find solutions to constructability issues encountered during construction.

·       Interpret contract plans and specifications and ensure compliance.

·       Monitor traffic control for public safety.

·       Inspect and document contract work.

·       Conduct quality checks on materials.

·       Foster positive relationships with other units, contractors, property owners and the public.

·       This position is part of the Graduate Program and will include a total of three to four rotations working with other technical disciplines.

The majority of the work performed by the person in this position will be performed in the Eastern Oregon Border Economic Region.

·       If you are a current Malheur County resident, you may receive 5% preference for this recruitment. Please indicate in your application questionnaire for this recruitment if you are requesting Malheur County residence preference in employment.

·       A resident applicant who received preference and accepted the position must maintain residency in Malheur County for at least five consecutive years following the hire date.

·       Failure to maintain residency in Malheur County is considered a voluntary termination.

A day in the life:

·       You will embark on an 18 to 24 month rotational program of on-the-job training and will work with a mentor for the duration of the program. The workload will be customized to meet your needs as well as the unique needs of the hiring region or technical center.

·       Rotations will include core training in safety, work culture and on technical topics. You will complete a minimum of three rotations through the design, construction and/or maintenance disciplines. Specific areas may include survey, construction, roadway, bridge, traffic, hydraulics or geo-environmental.

·       Work in both office and field environments, outdoor work may be necessary in all weather and traffic conditions.

·       Overtime, weekend and evening work may be required.

·       Employee is expected to travel region-wide when necessary, statewide travel may be required for training.

What we need:

Either a bachelor’s degree in civil or transportation-related engineering (or degree expected by June 2023) OR the completion and passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

Note: Applications will be considered from those who have graduated with an applicable degree or who have completed and received a passing score on the FE exam, within the past two years.

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.
