The role:  

We are recruiting for our chief engineer to lead our Engineering & Technical Services Branch in Salem! The branch consists of six engineering and technical sections with approximately 249 employees and an operating budget of approximately $52 million. As chief engineer, you will have overall department authority for engineering and technical services within the agency. You will oversee all agency engineering standards, practices and procedures and ensure we stay in compliance with federal and state statutes, rules and regulations.

As a key leader within the Delivery & Operations Division, you will have a strong voice in the strategic direction of the division, the ongoing development of more than 2,700 employees. In this role, you will work with the Maintenance & Operations Branch, Statewide Project Delivery Branch and the five Delivery & Operations Division regions to maintain, operate and improve Oregon’s multimodal transportation system.  Apply today!

A day in the life:

  • Provide oversight and leadership in establishing, implementing and maintaining engineering and technical standards and practices.
  • Lead and support improvements and innovation and in how work is performed.
  • Develop the quality control/quality assurance minimum requirements for the engineering and technical disciplines and ensure each of these disciplines has an effective and efficient program.
  • Resolve major design and engineering issues resulting from conflicting standards, needs, public desires and technical limitations.
  • Develop and implement actions to guide the strategic direction of the Engineering and Technical Services Branch.
  • Manage the branch through the six section managers by providing progressive leadership, clear direction, effective coaching, performance evaluations and feedback.
  • Establish and monitor the branch’s annual budget, staffing, resourcing, work plans and performance measures.
  • Represent the branch on statewide teams and committees.
  • Ensure statewide program funds are administered and expended in accordance with program requirements.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with other business lines, divisions and partners.
  • Assist in communications with legislators, local agency officials, the Federal Highway Administration, professional organizations and other stakeholders.

What we need:

A valid professional engineer’s (PE) license in civil engineering.

Note: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain professional registration within six months of hire.

AND

Seven years of management experience.

OR

Four years of management experience and a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
