The Active Transportation Engineer works in a fast-paced, innovative work environment along with a hardworking team of individuals that are involved in developing policy, programs, and plans for all active (bicycle/pedestrian) forms of transportation for the Department of Transportation by providing:
Management of the Transportation Alternatives Program. The management of the TA program allows the Active Transportation Engineer to improve the quality of life of citizens in both urban and rural South Dakota communities. Management practices include, the solicitation of projects, conducting on-site project visits, working with local governments to develop their project request(s), the recommendation of projects, overseeing consultant design contracts and local government agreements, environmental project coordinator, and plan review.
Work to improve design standards for alternative modes of transportation, which includes technical expertise in the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG), Bike/Shared Use Path Design and other non-motorized forms of transportation.
Serve as the Department’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator. Work with local communities and fellow SDDOT employees to ensure the bicycles and pedestrian needs are met in in the development of construction projects. Develop, implement and update a Statewide Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan that is effective for the citizens of South Dakota.
South Dakota is home to both National and State Scenic Byways that take visitors across our beautiful landscapes. The Active Transportation Engineer oversees all of the scenic byways in the state and serves as the Department’s Scenic Byways Coordinator. This includes the identification and designation of national and state scenic byways in compliance with established policies and procedures.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Only applicants with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field will be considered.
– engineering principles and practices;
– Americans with Disabilities Act requirements;
– AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities.
– interpret and apply regulations and design standards;
– review complete or portions of moderately complex engineering designs and make recommendations for internal approval;
– administer projects including budget to ensure that the purpose and need of the project are achieved;
– perform technical review of designs and works with designer to resolve issues.
– communicate effectively;
– communicate before large groups;
– work effective with a variety of people;
– set goals and put forth the effort to achieve them;
– set priorities and works in an orderly manner.
