The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is now accepting applications for an exciting Transportation Engineer Trainee position in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Central Surveys office in Newington, CT.

Current students who will be graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management by the end of May 2022 are strongly encouraged to apply! This position is full-time, 40 hours per week.  This position may also allow for some hybrid work scheduling options.

*New hires to State service start at Paygrade FS 18, step 5.


The mission of the Connecticut Department of Transportation is to provide a safe and efficient intermodal transportation network that improves the quality of life and promotes economic vitality for the State and the region.

The Central Surveys section performs various functions including:

Performing mapping, field, and land survey duties
Utilizing Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) system and other computer applications
Preparing, revising, and editing property acquisition and release mapping
Developing topographic mapping and Digital Terrain Models (DTM)
Utilizing ArcGIS software for Geographic Information System (GIS) applications
Operating survey field instruments
Performing complex computations for survey control networks
Performing related duties as required

Transportation Engineer Trainees receive training to develop technical engineering skills and knowledge. After successfully completing a one-year training program, trainees are eligible for promotion to the target class of Transportation Engineer 1 (Engineering) or Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering). After successfully completing two years as a Transportation Engineer 1, engineers are eligible for promotion to Transportation Engineer 2.



Please list your Driver’s license number, expiration date, and issuing State, Engineer in Training license number (if applicable) and any other job-relevant licenses or certifications you hold in the Licenses and Professional Certifications section of your application.
A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required and must be maintained.
Relevant information such as possession of any licensure, any specialization in college, or relevant internships must be included in the application package.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States, available to travel for training, conferences, meetings, field reviews, etc. both within and outside of normal working hours, when necessary.
Trainees may be required to work nights, weekends, and overtime. Trainees may be required to take and pass appropriate certifications from the New England Transportation Technician Program (NETTCP) and American Concrete Institute (ACI) or other required certifications.
