The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT) is accepting applications for paid Maintenance Seasonal Worker positions within the Bureau of Highway Operations. Positions will be based in District Offices and Maintenance Garages across the state!


  • Anticipated start date in May 2024 and ending by August 31, 2024
  • Monday – Friday, First Shift
  • 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week
  • Selected candidates must be at least 16 or 18 years old, depending on the position.

  • District 2: Colchester, Mansfield, Marlborough, Norwich, WaterfordDistrict 3: New Canaan, North Haven, Trumbull, Wallingford
  • District 4: Avon, Beacon Falls, East Granby, New Milford, Southbury, Winsted (Winchester)


As a Maintenance Seasonal Worker, you will have the opportunity to explore career paths and obtain valuable paid work experience in the maintenance field. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required and must be maintained. Duties for Maintenance Seasonal Worker may include:

General Maintenance:

  • Outdoor work including landscaping activities, grounds upkeep, weed whacking, raking, planting, digging, assisting tree crews with wood/debris removal.
  • May receive training in and assist in performing semi-skilled maintenance and/or construction work including but not limited to rough carpentry, painting, masonry, minor electrical, and mechanical.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


  • Knowledge of
    • principles, practices and procedures of assigned specialty;
    • operation of equipment, materials and activities of assigned specialty;
  • Knowledge to degree necessary for dealing with and understanding an individual’s behavior;
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;
    • techniques of assigned specialty skills;
  • Ability to
    • assist individuals in self-care habits, personal hygiene and proper social conduct where applicable;
    • understand and carry out written orders and oral instructions;
  • Adequate physical strength and stamina to perform duties;
  • Some positions may require supervisory and/or leadership abilities.


Any experience and training that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.


General Maintenance:

  • Experience in landscaping or grounds upkeep
  • Experience using light power equipment to perform landscaping and maintenance duties
  • Experience performing semi-skilled maintenance or work in carpentry, painting, electrical, and/or mechanical areas


  • Incumbents in this class assigned to recreational activities must be able to perform emergency first aid as needed and certain positions will require a current Standard First Aid Certificate.
  • Incumbents in this class assigned as bus drivers or operate a motor vehicle must possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator License to drive a bus and/or a Motor Vehicle Operators License as necessary.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
