The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT), is now accepting applications for Transportation Landscape Designer 1 positions within the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Engineering, Landscape Design Unit, in Newington. These positions are full time, 40 hours per week and are in the P-4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit.

The Landscape Design Unit is responsible for the design and construction oversight of landscape components on a wide range of transportation projects. The unit also is involved in the incorporation of special community features, pedestrian areas, and sustainable design elements into these projects.

Transportation Landscape Designers in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction perform design and construction related tasks under the direction of Landscape Architects. Transportation Landscape Designers complete site analysis, presentation, design, and contract development assignments for a wide range of transportation related projects. They also review work performed by others, including consultant work and contractor installations.

Transportation Landscape Designers receive training in department policy, practices, and procedures, as well as project design and management software, including the department’s standard CAD program, MicroStation. Training will also be provided in landscape design work relative to transportation projects in order to complete increasingly complex tasks independently.

Relevant information such as possession of any licensure, any specialization in college, or relevant internships must be included in the application package.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States, available to travel for training, conferences, meetings, field reviews, etc. both within and outside of normal working hours, when necessary. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required and must be maintained.

In addition to office work, travel and work on active construction projects within the roadside environment is required. Landscape Designers may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from highway, construction site, or on-site environments and may experience a moderate degree of discomfort from year-round weather conditions.  Landscape Designers must be able to walk on aggressive construction site topography, climb up hills, and climb down roadway embankments.

Competitive starting salary, excellent State benefits package including health and dental insurance, generous paid time off, retirement plan options, alternate work schedule options, telework opportunities, professional development and tuition reimbursement and a culture that promotes work-life balance. We also offer the convenience of an on-site, low-cost fitness center, on-site cafeteria and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging at our Newington, CT Headquarters facility. DOT facilities have ample free parking with easy access from major highways or by public transportation
