The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT), Bureau of Public Transportation, invites qualified applicants to apply for Transportation Rail Officer 2 positions located in the Office of Rail Project Concepts and Capital Planning Unit and the Office of Safety and Security in Newington. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel and possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

The position in the Office of Rail Project Concepts and Capital Planning Unit (PCN 131181) will be assigned work supporting all railroad conceptual design, preliminary studies, and project initiation for the following railroad infrastructure areas: Bridges, stations, facilities, communications and signals (C&S), traction power, catenary, Transit Oriented Development (TOD), and any other preliminary studies.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
Provide support for the capital planning, track outage planning, and all the Northeast Corridor Commission initiatives.
Provide support for the railroad operations and fleet procurement initiatives
Oversee and coordinate all railroad related projects for the Department’s Capital Program including work on the New Haven Main Line, New Canaan Branch Line, Danbury Branch Line, Waterbury Branch Line, Shore Line East and the Hartford Line
Supervise, recommend, and direct capital programs to maintain a state of good repair and improve the railroad infrastructure
Provide oversight of the Amtrak and Metro-North capital planning and coordination
The position in the Office of Safety and Security (PCN 131223) will aid in the coordination of rail regulatory and rail safety issues throughout the Department.

SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Interpreting and implementing State and Federal regulations related to system safety, drug and alcohol and roadway worker protection
Participating in rail operational exercises and post-incident safety investigations
Performing investigations and providing testimony for rail regulatory hearings
Providing coordination between other Department offices and various railroad companies during the planning, design, construction and maintenance of railroad related projects
Performing design reviews and field inspections of private and public highway-railway grade crossings
Assisting in the development and implementation of the State’s highway-railway grade crossing action plan
