Examples of Work
Work is performed under limited supervision of a higher-level engineer and is reviewed for accuracy and conformance of the final product to engineering principles and employing agency policies and practices. PositIon will plan and coordinate inspection and survey work on assigned construction projects. Coordinate engineering activities with contractors and/or utility companies. Compare and maintain complete, accurate records of materials tested and used, operations of work performed, compliance with contract special provisions and recording information as a permanent project record. Attend and assist in pre-construction meetings and conferences. Perform work involved in the quality testing, selection, and investigation of materials involved in construction of highway projects. Interpret the specifications, standards and manuals in the resolution of highway project problems. Provide training for two to four employees. Prepare traffic control plans and check for contractors compliance. Check and/or re-design small portions of plans to fit field conditions. Meet with adjacent property owners to explain what will be done to the adjacent roadway. Plan and supervise district personnel on road and structure repair projects as needed. Perform routine administrative work in the maintenance of records and reports. Maintain accurate measurements and documentation of project pay items. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment

PREFERRED: Have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Experience with computer programs, such as Microsoft Office products (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc), AASHTOWare Project, Microstation and Geopak. Bachelor’s degrees outside of the United States must be ABET accredited at the time of application. Will also consider applicants with a Master Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution in the United States.

OTHER: Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation. Must be able to attend meetings and field reviews out of town with occasional overnight travel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Extensive knowledge of construction inspection, materials requirements and surveying activities and a working understanding of the NDOT Construction Manual, Standard Specifications for Highway Construction, all aspects of the plans, specifications and estimates, and Department policies pertaining to construction operations. Must have certifications or abililty to obtain certifications as required per the Departments Construction Inspection Certification Program, for an Engineer performing in the field. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask at a high level. Ability to effectively coordinate and communicate with several levels of internal and external customers, including District staff, various central complex and other Department personnel, contractors, and the general public. Must have the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationships with key persons. Must have an objective mindset, be adaptable and have the ability to work as a member of a team. Regular and reliable attendance is required. Must also have the ability to assign and delegate tasks and activities, as needed. NDOT Encourages Applicants of All Ages and Experience.
