The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a Professional Engineer to manage the design of various rural and urban highway construction projects including resurfacing and reconstruction projects assigned to the Roadway Design Division. Projects managed will vary in scope, complexity, and diversity and will incorporate various roadway features including horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, cross-sections, earthwork, guardrail, and other features. The Professional Engineer will represent NDOT and coordinate project deliverables with the consultants assigned to the various projects.

Pay range is $34.176 – $50.380. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.

Examples of Work
Manage all aspects of various highway construction projects including schedules, consultant contracts, and providing guidance to the consultants assigned to the projects. Manage and guide the consultant in conducting the following activities:
• Design erosion control features and implement environmental process.
• Perform hydrologic/hydraulic analysis and design culverts and storm sewers.
• Draft roadway, culvert and storm sewer cross-section plans.
• Draft miscellaneous design details.
• Prepare preliminary and final construction project quantities and costs.
• Perform data collection, background research, note reduction, calculations, analysis, and documentation of engineering related decisions.
• Participate in and document engineering decisions, write special provisions, and keep project correspondence files accurate and up-to-date.
• Prepare for and participate in project related meetings and field inspections.
• Prepare project related documents and reports.
• Coordinate highway design projects within the division and department, including public service agencies such as cities, counties, and utilities.
• Aid and assist other engineering personnel as needed.

Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:  Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and one year of experience performing professional level engineering assignments. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.

PREFERRED:  Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Civil Engineering. Progressively responsible licensed professional experience in an applicable engineering field and experience in supervising professional engineers and/or technical engineering workers. Four to six years of experience in highway design and hydraulics. Experience interpreting complex manuals and applying standards, policies and procedures.

OTHER:  Occasional out of town travel, infrequent overnight stays, and working extended hours to assure project delivery. Requires a valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation. Regular and reliable attendance is also required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of basic engineering principles related to the design and construction of highway projects.
• Working knowledge in at least some of the following computer programs: Microsoft Office Programs – Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook; Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) programs – MicroStation / GEOPAK; ArcView GIS.
• Familiarity with NDOT’s Roadway Design Manual, Drainage & Erosions Control Manual, and Standard Specifications.
• Strong organizational and public relations skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, or lead part of a small interdisciplinary team.
