TxDOT’s Austin District North Travis Area Office is looking for a Transportation Engineer I, II, III, or IV based at the North Travis Area Office in Austin, Texas. This position will involve supporting our design programs through project management and project engineering of active design projects throughout Northern Travis County. These positions will also perform routine work related to transportation activities such as project planning and development, roadway and maintenance design, PS&E preparation, hydraulics, traffic analysis, scheduling, and training other employees.

This requisition is for a Transportation Engineer I, II, III, or IV. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of the position based on the applicant’s work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Salary Plan/Grade:

Transportation Engineer I: B24 ($62,004.00 – $85,000.00/yearly)
Transportation Engineer II: B25 ($66,259.00 – $90,000.00/yearly)
Transportation Engineer III: B26 ($72,886.00 – $98,000.00/yearly)
Transportation Engineer IV: B27 ($80,174.00 – $110,000.00/yearly)

Position Description
This position performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

Performs highly advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
Uses department’s enterprise Critical Path Method (CPM) schedule and resource management tool to accomplish scheduling and resource management of transportation projects.
Assists in overseeing design work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors.
Analyzes and recommends approval for modifications to highway maintenance contracts.
Coordinates phases of preliminary design and revisions in PS&E with districts, divisions, Administration, the FHWA,
contractors, fabricators, Corps of Engineers and local entities.
Assists in developing and/or monitoring budgets.
Monitors consultants’ progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
Reviews, coordinates, monitors and approves routine and emergency maintenance contracts; performs/oversees maintenance.
specifications writing/review, plans and proposal review, and preparation of estimates for letting.
Develops revised plan sheets for construction.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related science bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

Transportation Engineer I: 4 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Transportation Engineer II: 5 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Transportation Engineer III: 6 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Licensed Prof Engineer*
*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
