TxDOT’s Traffic Safety Division is looking for two Traffic Management Systems (TMS) Engineers based in Austin, TX. As a TMS engineer, you can help advance statewide priorities relating to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Traffic Signal Systems, Traffic Incident Management (TIM), Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) and emerging transportation technologies and innovation. Your work will require collaboration with transportation professionals across the organization.

Minimum Yearly Salary: 90,000.00

Maximum Yearly Salary: 120,000.00
Work Location: Stassney Hq – Main — 6230 East Stassney Lane Austin 78744

Travel: Yes, 25 % of the Time

Position Description
Transportation Engineer IV

Salary Grade B26 – $90,000 to $110,000 annually

Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work and serves as a recognized expert and provides statewide guidance or direction in functional areas such as ITS, traffic signal systems, TIM, TSMO and emerging transportation technologies. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.

Transportation Engineer V

Salary Grade B28 $100,000 – $120,000 annually

Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work and serves as a lead engineer for professional, technical and administrative staff and serves as a recognized expert and provides statewide guidance or direction in functional areas such as ITS, traffic signal systems, TIM, TSMO and emerging transportation technologies. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.  Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineer IV

Monitors contract performance, evaluates contract deliverables, reviews billing documentation, monitors the consultant’s compliance with the terms of the contract, and/or prepares and delivers a written evaluation of the consultant’s performance.
Acts as a liaison with divisions, MPOs, cities, counties and other governmental entities concerning traffic management and/or traffic safety projects.
Designs, installs, maintains and repairs all traffic management computer, communication, video systems or traffic signals, radios, and railroad crossing equipment.
Evaluates the performance of new transportation products.
Investigates and responds to public complaints on traffic signals, signs, railroad crossings, traffic management systems or other traffic related items.
Leads and Trains professional and administrative staff.
Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
Performs or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions related to traffic management systems.
Provides information regarding innovative and experimental technologies to department personnel.
Provides technical expertise in planning, coordinating, maintaining and operating traffic management systems.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Engineer V

Greater experience and skill in all of the above.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.

Transportation Engineer V: 8 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.

Substitutions:

Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications (All):

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Licensed Prof Engineer*
*Professional engineers licensed in another state, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Transportation Engineer V

Greater skill in all of the above.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
