The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce an opportunity to serve as an Engineer – Roadway Design Standards in the Location & Design Division in our Central Office!
The selected candidate will perform engineering and design duties necessary to provide VDOT with accurate special designs to roadway items, review of manufacturers shop drawings, and assist in the development of special design insertable sheets for the completion of roadway plan assemblies. Provide technical expertise concerning related issues.
Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to:
Assist with the development, updating, and implementation of the VDOT Road and Bridge Standards.
Develop and recommend standard and special design roadway items for a wide range of transportation projects. Determine appropriate action to resolve difficult challenges.
Complete standard and special design tasks using appropriate design software. Use Microstation and other non-CADD applications for development and delivery of designs.
Perform design tasks in accordance with project scheduling and in support of VDOT programs. Make timely decisions and prioritizes workload.
Conduct research and provide technical assistance to customers on a variety of standard and special design issues especially those concerning roadside safety. Serve as a member of standing committees such as the Precast Concrete Association of Virginia (PCAV) and the New Products Committee.
Coordinate the flow of information both orally and in writing to and from others that contributes to project development.
Participate in technical research of AASHTO, FHWA and Pooled Fund publications for inclusion of new roadway designs in the standards.
Perform the design engineering necessary to provide accurate non-standard (project specific) designs of roadway items.
Provide the review of manufacturers shop drawings.
Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers, as it relates to the standards and project specific designs.
