The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce a competitive opportunity to serve as a Roadway Design Engineer the Central Office’s Location and Design Division.
The selected candidate will design, manage and produce right of way and construction roadway plans for a wide range of transportation projects using automated engineering and design software. Maintain strong skills in new design technology and construction methodology.
This challenging and rewarding position’s specific responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to:
Project Management – Provide direction and coordination for all project activities. Integrate team member deliverables and budgets. Establish schedules and budgets so that complex roadway plans can be developed utilizing VDOT’s standards, policies and procedures. Assist in directing daily project activities. Develop, manage and monitor scope, schedule and estimate for assigned projects to deliver projects on time and within budget. Coordinate with other divisions ensuring project segments are kept on schedule.
Roadway Design – Develop and review sub-components and complete roadway designs using automated engineering and design software from scoping to advertisement for a wide range of transportation projects. Compute quantities and prepare plan assemblies for project milestones from scoping to advertisement. Take appropriate action to resolve problems related to project design. Provide technical direction and support in the application of VDOT’s standards, specifications, policies and procedures in the development of transportation projects. Ensure deliverables are accurate and correct in content.
CADD and Computer Skills – Complete roadway design tasks utilizing MicroStation and GEOPAK/OpenRoads/ORD software; and developing estimates using VDOT software packages, including PCES and Transport/PreCon.

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience in roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials.
Experience applying civil engineering principles as they relate to roadway design and standard design technical knowledge.
Experience applying design standards, specifications, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of principles of roadway safety that impact roadway standards and special designs.
Ability to plan and schedule work.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences.
Skill in building networks and relationships with employees, field personnel, contractors, manufacturers and FHWA representatives.
Skill in delivering exemplary customer service.
Experience using design and analysis software and drafting tools to develop simple and complex roadway designs.
Experience performing detailed engineering calculations, estimating quantities and cost of materials/labor.
Preferred Qualifications:
BS in Civil Engineering or related field; equivalent experience and training may substitute for degree.
Engineering in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience in roadway design and project management for transportation projects.
Experience working on a wide range of large, complex roadway projects including the evaluation of alternative designs for practical solutions.
