The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire a transportation technician to support all functions of the Puget Sound Gateway Program Management group. This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training, allowing you to progress upward through the Transportation Technician field. This position will assist in the integrity, accuracy, accountability, and documentation of the business activities needed for the successful delivery of this multibillion-dollar program. The successful candidate appointed to this unique position will serve a vital role in support of WSDOT’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Business Services Assistant will:

Use standard engineering practices and techniques on agreement payments.
Review, interpret, research, and verify information included within invoice packages submitted by both internal and external partners in support of approval of payment.
Verify appropriate documentation is provided, interpretation of progress reports, checking calculations, verifying compliance of approved rates, contract language, and State and Federal regulations.
Research payment status, work order, payment group assignment and vendor codes using TRAINS, other databases, and Program reference documents.
Use various databases, check agreement budgets and schedules for low balances and agreement expiration, alerting managers as needed.
Communicate with internal and external parties as needed and coordinate with Accounting Financial Services staff for final invoice approval and/or to resolve payment issues.
Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Technician 1 level, the following are required:

High School Diploma or GED
To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Technician 2 level, the following are required:

An Associate degree in Engineering, OR
Completion of an accredited vocational/technical program consisting of at 1,200 instruction hours in Engineering Technology, OR
High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience in performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1
To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Technician 3 level, the following are required:

Two (2) years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent, OR
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field, OR
Associates of Arts degree in a related field and two (2) years of experience in engineering, contract or agreement administration support, program management support, budget tracking, accounts payable, auditing or closely related duties. OR
Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.
Important Notes

Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This position offers flexible/hybrid work options.
The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.

This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress upward through the Transportation Technician field and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Technician 3. Candidates will be considered for a Transportation Technician 1, Transportation Technician  2, or Transportation Technician 3, depending on their qualifications. Annual salary levels for each position are:Transportation Technician 1: $42,852 – $57,216
Transportation Technician 2: $53,121 – $71,479
Transportation Technician 3: $60,190 – $80,879
