Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Geotechnical Field Exploration expert.  This position will direct and supervise the Field exploration Unit within the Geology and Geotechnical Engineering Sections of the Northwest Region.  This is an excellent position for hands on, manager with expertise in the fields of soil investigation and soil classification.

This position will conduct site reviews of geotechnical field exploration projects to determine strategies, equipment / personnel needs and safety plans. The selected candidate must be able to provide technical expertise to crews on more difficult or environmentally sensitive site access, specialized field testing and sampling, installation of field exploration instrumentation, and stabilization of deep test borings. This position is also responsible for coordination of maintenance and repairs on field exploration testing and support equipment.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Geotechnical Field Exploration expert will:

Directs and supervises the Field Exploration Unit within the Geology and Geotechnical Sections of the Northwest Region Materials Lab.
Schedule and coordinate field exploration operations, monitors cost and production to meet project’s schedule and budget.
Provides expertise to the field exploration crews
Coordinates field exploration project requirements with the geotechnical project managers, region project offices, the HQ Geotechnical Office, and materials engineer
Provides technical oversight on the installation of geotechnical instrumentation at field exploration sites
Coordinates with Project Offices to obtain environmental permits and agreements for right of entry
Reviews Boring logs from the Drilling Inspectors for accuracy and completeness and does cost estimates for region project offices
Coordinates the replacement and maintenance of field exploration testing and support equipment, maintain stock of drilling supply’s, tooling and instrumentation supplies.
Performs reading and recording piezometers, coordinates traffic control needs for the drilling operations, investigates claims in regard to drilling operation and retrieves geotechnical records.
Coordinate utility locates for all upcoming projects and document and complete Notice of Intent forms for newly drilled wells and decommissioned wells.
Monitor and manage the boring log input files based on the Drilling Inspector’s field notes.

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

One year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent experience such as Bridge Engineer 2 or Transportation Planning Specialist 2, OR
6 years of geotechnical field exploration experience.

In addition to:

The ability to train and supervise the daily activities of a Geotechnical Drilling unit
Computer skills and working knowledge of Access, Microsoft Excel, Word, gINT and DIRT
The ability to coach and mentor team members
Working knowledge of WSDOT Soil and Rock Classification methods
The ability to operate wheel, track, and skid mounted drill equipment and associated support equipment and conduct subsurface geotechnical investigation and soil field testing in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO and other applicable standards
Valid Washington State driver’s license
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

Experience with scheduling method, budget practices, and fundamentals of GIS data collection
Forklift operator qualifier and other machinery operation experience
Familiarity with MUTCD and Traffic Control Plan Development
Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement and without airbrake restriction
Hazardous waste operation and emergency response certification
Washington Department of Ecology Well Construction Operator’s License

The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional general wage increase of 3.25% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2022.
