Washington State Department of Transportation

WSDOT is currently seeking an experienced industry professional to serve as the Vessel Electrification Program Manager for the Washington State Ferries (WSF) Division. As a member of the Vessel Engineering and Maintenance Department and the matrixed System Electrification Team, this position is responsible to oversee the new vessel construction program and major vessel conversion projects that together will transform the nation’s largest ferry system to hybrid electric propulsion. WSF is undertaking an ambitious initiative to move toward a “greener” ferry fleet with the twin goals of reliability and a lighter environmental footprint. Currently Washington State Ferries burns nearly 19 million gallons of diesel fuel per year, making it the largest consumer in state government. Over a twenty-year period, the agency will convert six ferries from diesel to hybrid electric and build 16 new hybrid electric ferries. The impact will be a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 76% and toxic pollutants by 59%, exceeding the 2030 and 2040 targets established by RCW 70A.45.050. The estimated value of these investments is $3.6 billion over twenty years. Additional details are available on the Ferry System Electrification page and in the System Electrification Plan.
