The Opportunity
WSDOT is eager to hire an engineering professional to serve as MIS Engineer. This position will provide assistance with the administration of the Motorist Information Sign (MIS) program within WSDOT’s Northwest Region (NWR) which provides informational signing for motorists using the interstate and state highways. This position will review over and apply RCWs and WACs governing the MIS program. The successful candidate appointed to this unique position will serve a vital role in support of WSDOT’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the MIS Engineer will:
Assists with the administration of the MIS program within WSDOT’s NWR.
Review and determine eligibility of business applications received by applying applicable RCWs, WACs, FHWA policy, MIS desk manual, WSDOT Traffic Manual.
Conduct field reviews of business/facilities and verifies sign spacing availability.
Respond to and provide guidance to public inquiries and questions pertaining to MIS permitting via written and verbal methods of communication.
Determine space availability for additional backboards at a location/corridor.
Organize and processes customer invoices, past due statements, and close unpaid MIS accounts.
Design MIS backboards and logo placements, and prepare signing work orders and installation work orders.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, or equivalent, OR
Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 or equivalent, OR
Bachelors degree with a major study in Civil Engineering.
In addition to:
Current driver’s license
Ability to travel throughout the region to perform various field reviews.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
Experience operating Microsoft based computer software (word, outlook, excel) and adobe programs at an intermediate level.
Experience understanding and applying WACs, RCWs, FHWA rules and information in WSDOT Traffic Manual and Standard plans and specs.
Experience understanding and applying MUTCD, WSDOT Sign Fab manual and other WSDOT manuals for rules regarding sign design and layout.
Important Notes
Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This position offers flexible/hybrid work options
The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
