The WI Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is seeking an interested and qualified individual to fill a Regional Bridge Maintenance Coordinator (Transportation Specialist Advanced) vacancy in the Bureau of Structures!

This full-time position will be headquartered in La Crosse, WI.

Position Summary
This position is responsible for the completion of structure inspections and oversight of the annual structure maintenance program for the La Crosse area in the Southwest Region. The position provides inspection oversight for assigned bridge repairs and/or maintenance activities on all bridges by county forces and private contractors. The position may provide assistance to the Bureau of Structures (BOS) bridge repair crew to maintain or repair state-owned bridges. The position provides backup for bridge damage investigation and repair with the following activities: estimating damage, determining needed repairs, coordinating plans, or preparing sketches if necessary for the repair by contractor or county forces. The position provides scoping recommendations for the bridge rehabilitation let program. This position works closely with the Region Inspection Program Manager.

Salary Information
This position is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $67,746 -$87,360, plus excellent benefits. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Job Details
This position offers a hybridized work schedule. The position will be headquartered at and required to work from the DTSD Southwest Region Office Building in La Crosse, WI at least 2 days per week. All employees working a hybrid work schedule are still expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin. This topic will be discussed more at the time of the interview.

This position requires the ability to travel independently within the Southwest region during and outside of regular business hours.

This position requires fieldwork. This can include working in all seasons, including adverse weather conditions and working in high volume traffic conditions, bending on a limited basis, and lifting approximately 40 lbs. and carrying this load approximately 50 feet over varying terrain.

This position is required to serve in standby status as a member of the Region’s Incident Management Coordinator (RIMC) Team on an as scheduled basis.

Bridge Inspector Special Requirements:

  • Successful completion of NHI 130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges.
  • Successful completion of NHI 130078 Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges.
  • Certified Bridge Inspector per WisDOT Structure Inspection Manual.
  • Ability to frequently travel on an independent basis, such as traveling 3 to 5 days a week to multiple locations in one day.
  • Ability to work outdoors in conditions of heat, cold, humidity, dust, and to walk over rough terrain.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects, such as tools or materials.
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours.
  • Ability to work in high volume traffic conditions.
  • Ability to work in or near water, including safely working from a boat.
  • Bridge inspection requires a level of physical agility and strength, plus the ability to work at heights up to several hundred feet above ground level safely.  Access to inspection areas is gained by entering small access hatches and climbing or descending ladders and also requires crawling on beams and piers. Safety equipment including harnesses may be required. Some inspections require entering and riding in a special bucket suspended underneath the structure from a hydraulic boom on special bridge inspection machines known as a “Snooper” and “Reach-All”.

Qualifications
Qualified applicants will have experience with all of the following:

  • Experience in design, construction, maintenance, or inspection of transportation structures (structures are defined as bridges, culverts, sound walls, retaining walls, or sign bridges).
  • Experience as a team member completing structure inspections (experience may include completing tasks such as sounding concrete, deck chaining, underwater bridge profiling, note taking, inspection data entry, quantifying element condition states, or inspection planning).
