Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Public Transportation Division is currently seeking a Transportation Planning Specialist 5 in Seattle, WA. WSDOT oversees rail transit safety for the state. The agency is designated as the Federal Transit Administration State Safety Oversight agency and is charged with developing program standards, procedures, and technical direction to each rail transit agency.
This position serves as an agency expert, staying apprised of the evolving federal safety standards and regulations and ensuring that the agencies they oversee maintain compliance. Emerging federal requirements are expanding responsibilities to include safety oversight in planning, design, and construction as well as operations. This position is a certified public transportation safety expert that develops safety guidelines, goals, objectives, standards, procedures, and measures. Rail transit agencies, including Tacoma Link, Link Light Rail, the Monorail, and the Seattle Streetcar, must incorporate and comply with the requirements of the program standard. Failure to adhere to these requirements may result in WSDOT fining the agency or stopping service. This position reviews, approves, oversees, audits, and enforces the safety plans at rail transit agencies. This position has investigative and enforcement authority. At least once every three years, the position audits each agency’s compliance with the safety plan requirements. The position reports annually on the status of agency safety to the agency board of directors, the Federal Transit Administration, and the Governor.
